THE BRAZIL NUT

The "Bolivian" Brazil nut, has a high ecological value on the Amazon rainforest because the peculiarity that needs around 30 years to bear the first fruits

THE TREES

These trees only reproduce through natural pollination.
The first fruits only appear after thirty or forty years.
The greater or lesser harvest is determined only by the stability of the climate, that is to say if there are climatic phenomena like droughts or floods the volumes are affected.
The importance of this fruit to the Amazonian north of Bolivia is vital, since it moves 75 percent of its economy and more than 10 thousand families, among peasants, indigenous and country persons are involved in the collection.

THE IMPACT

That is why its contribution is not only economic but environmental. The demands of maintaining the ecosystem forces the company to conserve the Amazonian forests of Bolivia. Its importance has been considered by the Bolivian government that prohibited, by means of a law, the felling of this species. In addition, Supreme Decree No. 2737 was issued declaring the National Year of the Bolivian Brazil nuts, which began on October 1st, 2016 and ends on October 1, 2017.

THE FACTS

  • One Brazil nut contains so much fat that when ignited it burns like a candle for up to seven minutes.

  • The average lifespan of the trees is 500 years, but they can live up to 1000 years.

  • The huge Brazil nut trees can grow to a height of up to 50 meters in the Amazon rainforest and their trunks are over 2 meters wide.

  • It takes over 30 years before the trees begin to bear fruit.

  • The fruit takes 14 months to ripen.

  • Up to 60% of Brazil nuts come from Bolivia.

THE PROCESS

The nuts grow wild so their use has no negative impact on the Amazon rainforest. From December to February Brazil nut gatherers struggle through the wild jungle and pick up the fallen fruit the size of a human head right from the ground.

  • They cut the shell of the fruit open with a machete and remove the seeds from their shells.

  • These are then quickly heated with steam until the shell cracks open so that the seed stays intact.

  • The nuts are then dehydrated to prevent them from spoiling.

  • The delicious oil is cold pressed and it is sent over the Atlantic to Czechia immediately after extraction.
